Montgomery County Installs Traffic Calming, Pedestrian Safety Measures

By Robin Loube

The County recently installed flexposts at two intersections along Dennis Avenue in our neighborhood — at Edgewood Avenue (shown below) and at Royalton Road.  Their purpose is to slow vehicle travel speeds and improve pedestrian safety by reducing roadway exposure to pedestrians.

Flexposts help slow traffic, lessening the chance of an injury.

The flexposts are part of the County’s Vision Zero effort, whose goal is to achieve zero fatalities and serious injuries on County roads by 2030.  If you travel between our neighborhood and Georgia Avenue on Dennis Avenue, you will notice quite a few similar flexpost installations.

Montgomery County Severe and Fatal Crashes 2012–2016

There have been numerous severe crashes along University Boulevard bordering our neighborhood, with two fatalities — one vehicle occupant (at Dennis Avenue) and one pedestrian (at Arcola Avenue) — during the years shown in the graph at left.   ■
