Blair’s Tri-M Chapter Plays Big Band Music for Seniors

By Michelle Roberts

Montgomery Blair High School Tri-M Music Honor Society Chapter #4407 hosted its first annual “Swingin’ Sounds for Senior Citizens” event on 19 February.  Residents from nursing homes, assisted living, and the Silver Spring senior community were treated by both the Jazz Lab Band and Honors Jazz Band to the music of Glen Miller, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, and more.

In addition to performing in the jazz bands, Tri-M students served as greeters, dance partners, decorators, program designers, and event planners for this relaxed, casual coffee house program.

About Tri-M, NAfME

Blair High School’s Jazz Ensemble performed jazz and Big Band classics before an enthusiastic crowd of seniors in February.

Tri-M, which stands for Modern Music Masters, is a program of NAfME, the National Association for Music Education.  Through membership of more than 75,000 active, retired, and pre-service music teachers, and with 60,000 honor students and supporters, NAfME serves millions of students nationwide through activities from preschool to graduate school.  Since 1952, more than 5,500 Tri-M chapters have been chartered in the United States and abroad, and current membership exceeds 50,000.  The goal of the Tri-M Music Honor Society is to foster greater interest in band, orchestra, and choral performance, as well as piano, guitar, music theory, and music technology.  Students are selected for membership in the honor society on the basis of musicianship, scholarship, character, leadership, and service to their school and community.
