Silver Spring Judged Most ‘Walkable City’

By Jacquie Bokow

The April issue of Prevention magazine rated each of 50 states for Walkability.  Silver Spring, Maryland, was rated #1 in Maryland and #17 of the Top 100 cities in the Nation.

The other Maryland rankings:

  1. Bethesda,
  2. Gaithersburg,
  3. Dundalk,
  4. Baltimore,
  5. Frederick,
  6. Germantown,
  7. Wheaton-Glenmont,
  8. Columbia, and
  9. Ellicott City.

The experts cited good countdown signals for walkers that allow enough time to cross at busy intersections and our vibrant Downtown with shopping, dining, and entertainment as reasons for rating Silver Spring at the top.  We have the most mass transit users anywhere in the state and a low number of cars per household helped Silver Spring rank #1 in Maryland.
